DIY Paint Chip Sign

Posted on August 30 2013

With the new school year starting up and a lot of college kids moving into new dorms and apartments, we decided to find a cute and cheap way to help those college kids turn their spaces into a place that feels like home! This project isn’t just for college kids, though. It can be used as a holiday decoration or it can even be a thoughtful gift! We are going to show you how to make this super cute paint chip sign.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Paint chips from Home Depot (these are free…yay!)
Scissors
Mini hole-puncher
Twine
Stencil or a computer with a cute font to make a stencil

The very first thing you’ll need to do is go to paint section of Home Depot and choose the paint chips you want. You want to have a good idea of what you want the paint chip sign to say so you don’t get too little or too many paint chips. We chose Lee Brice’s “Love Like Crazy” lyrics because we loved the meaning behind them and we loooove country music.

After you’ve done that, the next step (and also the most tedious step) is to trace the letters on to the paint chip. You can use your own stencil or you can use a computer. We used a computer and the font “Oklahoma” in size 400. You have to print out each letter, cut it out, and trace it on to the back of the paint chip. Make sure the cut out of the letter is facing down on the back of the paint chip so the letters don’t end up backwards! After you’re done tracing you can cut the letters out of the paint chip.

Once you’re done cutting the letters out you are ready to punch holes into the letters! We recommend punching two holes at the top of each letter so that they are securely hanging from the twine. The next step (you guessed it!) is to string the letters on to the twine!

How cute are these hearts?!

Now that your paint chip sign is complete,  you get to decide how you want to hang it up. We hung it up using blue painter’s tape and taped glitter hearts on top to hide the tape! The blue tape is perfect for spaces where you can’t put nails in the wall. Here is our finished product:

Our sign was the perfect touch to this bedroom!

This project is cheap, fun, and ends up looking awesome! We loved doing it and hope you did too!
